Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy Recipe

↓ Jump to Recipe

There's something magical about coming home to a house that smells like a warm hug. That's exactly what this Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy delivers tender, fall-apart chicken swimming in silky, rich gravy that tastes like it simmered all day (because it did, while you were out living your life).

I didn't grow up making elaborate dinners. My mom taught me that good food doesn't have to be complicated, and this recipe is proof. It's the kind of meal that makes your family think you spent hours in the kitchen, when really, you just tossed everything in the slow cooker and went about your day. No judgment here I've learned that working smarter, not harder, is the secret to staying sane during busy weeks.

This easy chicken and gravy recipe is incredibly forgiving, uses everyday ingredients, and turns out perfect every single time. Let's make dinner easy tonight.

Why You'll Love This Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy

Listen, I've tried a lot of slow cooker chicken recipes over the years, and this one keeps coming back into rotation for good reason. It's comfort food at its finest creamy, savory, and satisfying without requiring much effort.

What makes this slow cooker chicken and gravy stand out is how it transforms simple boneless chicken breasts into something incredibly tender. The gravy gets thick and luscious, perfect for spooning over garlic mashed potatoes or fluffy white rice. Plus, you probably have most of these ingredients in your pantry right now.

It's also versatile. Want to make it a little fancier? Serve it over creamy pesto pasta. Keeping it simple? Pile it on top of easy roast potatoes. Either way, it works.

Ingredients You'll Need

Here's what goes into this grandma's crockpot chicken and gravy:

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts – The star of the show
  • Garlic powder, salt, black pepper – Season to taste; don't be shy
  • 2 packets chicken gravy mix – Your secret weapon for rich flavor
  • 10.5 ounce can cream of chicken soup – Adds that creamy texture
  • 2 cups water – Thins everything to the perfect consistency
  • ½ cup sour cream – Stirred in at the end for extra richness
  • Sliced green onions – Optional, but they add a nice pop of color and freshness

This is basically a 3 ingredient crockpot chicken and gravy with cream of chicken soup at its core, with a few extras to make it taste like you put in way more effort than you did.

How to Make Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy

Step 1: Season the Chicken

Start by seasoning both sides of your chicken breasts with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. I like to be generous here this is your flavor foundation. If you're feeling adventurous, a little paprika or Italian seasoning works beautifully too.

Step 2: Mix the Gravy Base

In your slow cooker, whisk together the chicken gravy mix, cream of chicken soup, and water until it's smooth. No lumps allowed! This creates that silky, old fashioned chicken and gravy texture we're after.

Step 3: Add the Chicken

Nestle those seasoned chicken breasts right into the gravy mixture. Make sure they're covered you want them swimming in that goodness. This is where the magic happens.

Step 4: Cook Low and Slow

Cover your crock pot and cook on low for 6-8 hours. I know, I know it feels like forever. But trust me, this is the secret to tender, juicy chicken. If you're in a rush, you can cook on high for 3-4 hours, but low and slow wins every time.

Step 5: Shred and Stir in Sour Cream

Once the chicken is cooked through and tender, use a fork to break it into chunks. Don't worry if it looks a little messy that's the goal! Stir in the sour cream, and watch everything come together into creamy, dreamy perfection.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

Spoon this gorgeous boneless chicken breast with gravy over your favorite side mashed potatoes, rice, buttery egg noodles, or even baked sweet potato fries. Top with sliced green onions if you're feeling fancy, and dig in.

Tips for the Best Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy

Use chicken thighs if you prefer. While this recipe calls for chicken breasts, thighs work beautifully and stay even more moist during the long cook time. Just adjust the seasoning slightly since thighs are richer.

Don't skip the sour cream. It might seem like an extra step, but stirring it in at the end adds a tangy richness that takes this dish from good to "I need this recipe right now."

Make it a full meal. Toss in some baby carrots, diced potatoes, or sliced mushrooms at the beginning for a complete one-pot dinner. This is how I sneak extra veggies into my family's meals without anyone complaining.

Leftovers are gold. This reheats beautifully. I've been known to eat it for lunch straight out of the fridge (don't judge). It's also fantastic spooned over homemade biscuits or used as a filling for pot pies.

What to Serve with Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy

This dish begs for comforting sides. Here are my favorites:

  • Three cheese scalloped potatoes
  • Honey glazed carrots
  • Green bean casserole
  • Cornbread stuffing
  • Sweet potato casserole

For a lighter option, serve it over a bed of grilled asparagus or alongside a fresh strawberry spinach salad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this without cream of chicken soup?

Absolutely! If you want a slow cooker chicken and gravy no soup version, substitute with ½ cup of heavy cream mixed with 1 cup of chicken broth. It won't be quite as thick, but it's delicious.

Can I add ranch seasoning?

Yes! For a slow cooker chicken and gravy with ranch dressing mix, add one packet of ranch seasoning to the gravy mixture. It gives it a tangy, herby twist that's really tasty.

You're just letting time and heat do their thing while you tackle the rest of your day. And when you walk through the door hours later to that incredible aroma? You'll feel like a kitchen genius.

So grab your slow cooker, toss everything in, and let this easy, cozy meal work its magic. Here's to making something well, tasty without breaking a sweat.
