Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) allows you to quickly evaluate your body shape simply with your weight and height, regardless of your gender. Quickly calculate your BMI and find out in which category you fall.

The body mass index (BMI) is the only index validated by the World Health Organization to evaluate the corpulence of an individual and therefore the possible health risks. The BMI makes it possible to determine whether one is thin, overweight, or obese, for example.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT BMI FOR A WOMAN?

The calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI) is based on an identical formula for men and women. Similarly, the calculation of BMI does not take into account age. Whether a woman is 20 years old, 50 years old, or 70 years old, the formula used to calculate the body mass index remains the same.

Therefore, you should use the BMI calculator to find out if your BMI is within the norm.

After menopause, between the ages of 50 and 60, women tend to gain weight. The reason? Menopause disrupts the metabolism: we spend fewer calories at rest.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM OVERWEIGHT?

Body Mass Index

It is important to know that the calculation of the Body Mass Index (BMI) does not take into account the distribution of liquids. For example, in the case of water retention (liquid infiltrates the tissues), we can notice a rapid weight gain. However, this is not a question of kilos linked to an excess of food, but rather a transitory variation in weight.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) also does not take into account the distribution of bone, muscle, and fat mass in the body. This is why two people with the same BMI can have completely different bodies.

Nevertheless, BMI remains a useful indicator recommended by specialists. If your BMI seems abnormal and you wonder if you are overweight, talk to your doctor. He or she will be able to help you interpret your BMI, prescribe additional tests (fat and sugar tests) if necessary, and advise you.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL BMI FOR A MAN?

A man’s BMI is based on the same formula as that used to calculate a woman’s BMI, i.e. BMI = weight (kg) / height (m²).

However, it is difficult to rely on BMI alone because a muscular man and a “paunchy” man can have the same BMI for opposite bodies.

Athletes, whose muscle mass is very developed, have a high BMI without being obese and presenting risks for their health.

Obesity also increases with age, from 10.4% in men between 30 and 39 years to 20.8% for men aged 60 to 69 years.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM OBESE?

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), obesity is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more. But we now know that excess fat is more dangerous when it is located in the abdomen.

We must also distinguish between obesity and “severe” obesity. There are 3 stages according to BMI.

  • BMI between 30 and 34.9: class I (moderate obesity)
  • BMI between 35-39.9: class II (severe obesity)
  • BMI ≥ 40 kg/m²: class III (massive or morbid obesity)

It is essential to take into account the waist circumference in addition to the BMI calculation. Waist circumference is measured with a tape measure in centimeters (cm). Abdominal obesity is defined according to the recommendations of the High Authority of Health, namely a waist circumference greater than 94 cm for men and greater than 80 cm for women.

Obesity favors the appearance of numerous pathologies, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, but also liver disease, kidney disease, and even numerous cancers, particularly of the breast, uterus, or liver. It is also important to underline the psychological and social impact of obesity.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL MUSCLE MASS?

For a person of normal build, muscle mass represents 35% of weight for men and 28% of weight for women. Through our daily physical activity and even at rest, we use our muscles, which results in energy expenditure and causes us to lose calories. In the case of dieting, as the food intake decreases, it is important to ensure that the muscle mass remains stable. Indeed, if the nutritional intake decreases but the muscle mass also decreases, then the metabolism decreases, that is to say, that we spend less energy at rest. To compensate for this, we must therefore do more physical activity.
